Moretto ring converted from a vintage 18K gold brooch with garnet and enamel

In proposing this ring, I must start by saying that it brings with it two interesting details.
First of all it must be said that it is a converted jewel, in this case from a vintage brooch, from the 50s: the head therefore derives from the brooch, while the stem is new.
The second element concerns what the central part represents, which is the protagonist of this ring: it is in fact an example of classic Venetian jewelry, or the so-called moretti.

The name of these jewels derives from the term "moro", used since the Middle Ages to indicate the Muslims who populated part of the Iberian Peninsula and Sicily; the term was coined from the late Latin "Mōrus", which comes from "Maurus", or "Mauro, inhabitant of Mauretania"; but the word began to be used by extension also to indicate the Saracen pirates, who carried out raids on the coasts.
And it is precisely at the same time as these latest events that jewels of this type began to be made and worn, as a kind of amulet, and also arriving in Venice.
Here they spread not as useful objects to exorcise the attacks of these men, but as a demonstration and representation of the submissive pirates.
Once the dominion of Venice was consolidated on the Adriatic, these jewels spread enormously, becoming a classic of Venetian jewelry.

In our case, the moretto is made of 18K gold (in the specific part of the turban, the mouth, the eyes and the bust) and we find a garnet set in the turban, decorated with white and black enamels; the stem is also in 18K gold.
